Why Obama?

Posted by Kiel on Feb 26, 2008

Hopefully the primaries will be over soon and we will have a Republican and Democratic nominees for the presidency. One thing that I’m trying to get over is “what makes Barack Obama so appealing?” It seems like this guy has garnered great support and when it comes to his campaign people think, “hope, change” and are reminded of John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy (read endorsement by Caroline Kennedy, JFK’s daughter).

I don’t have definite opinions about him yet, I’ve begun reading his “Blueprint for Change” (download available here). I want to hear what you think, feel free to leave comments on why you are for or against Obama. If you know about his policies, write about that. If you don’t know why you like Obama (but you do), what makes him so appealing?

Want to see something really cool? Check out this video on YouTube about this Obama supporter, he has his facts down. Check it out, leave your opinion! There is also an interesting article at the New York Times regarding the safety of Barack Obama.

Why do I support Obama?

For a lot of reasons. First off is the obvious; that he is the only candidate that can bring not only both parties together, but all types and groups of people. As seen by the record number of people coming out for his rallies and speeches,he is a voice that is uniting people across this country. People want their voices heard and he is not only listening to us, but he will bring our voices to the streets of Washington.

Among the issues side, I believe and support a lot of Barack’s policies and plans for the future.

His focus on education (http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education) is a top priority to me. He has a clear plan on how to change every child left behind, along with adding a tuition assistance program for college students.

He believes that every woman should have a voice in this country and not be overshadowed (http://women.barackobama.com/page/content/WFOhome).

Barack has a background in community development and rebuilding cities from the inside out. His views on community service is an issue that I feel very strongly about(http://www.barackobama.com/issues/service). He has shown a dedication to working from the bottom up and knows that changes need to be made in Washington in order to rebuild the country.

Barack gives everyone hope in change and hope for a better future for everyone.

Supporting Barack is supporting a movement for a better country.

Here’s what my friend Chris had to say… he posted it as a note on Facebook…

“I have to state that first off, I am a political scientist, so i am a bit jaded. Secondly i can be long winded, so bear with me. thirdly, I am a Libertarian, so I am not a fan of OBama.

Truth be told this “primary Race” has gone exactly as i predicted it would. The moves being pulled by both the Media and the candidates are almost texbook. For starters the Democrats know that they can’t have Hillary as the primary ticket, they have to have someone likeable and eloquent. Finally they need someone who is not a woman. It is still a fact of life that women are not seen as authority figures in our society, and the American people will not elect a woman president yet. There was no race, Obama will be put in the President slot, most likely with Hillary in the Vice seat. This way they can pull the majority of the minority vote.

On the GOP side, it was a bit touch and go, but McCain has pulled out ahead, as he is a moderate with a proven track record. He is smart enough not to remind people of Bush, but gold old boy enough to keep republics interested.

What i really hate in all of this is the media jading of the public. Unfortunatly the american public is a bunch of sheep. They have no ability to think for themseleves. As well the desire to always be with the winner, has turned politics into a simple race, instead of the drama it should be. The debates this year have been great for weeding out people without the ability to speak, the problem is the American people have the attention span of a Chiahuahua on crack, and can’t sit through so many and are losing interest. The media needs to tell them who is going to win and therefore who they should vote for to stay “popular”.

I suggest an alternate strategy. Look to the 3rd candiadates. Look to Mr. Ron Paul for instance. He is still in the race, with more money the McCain, however the media pays him no attention. There are several reasons for this. First, he is not mainstream, he is not predictable in what he will say. Second he questions the status quo, and the accepted polite things to say. Thirdly, he has real ideas that could change the country but would mean a few people would be made uncomfortable. I don’t know about you, but for me the good of the many was what was intended for Government, not the good of the special interest groups.

Truth be told there is no real differance in Obama and Clinton, except that one was born with testicles. On the issues they are almost identical, and on their reforms, the only differances are in details; it is all the same empty promises and smoke.

I challenge you the reader, America, lets be great. America was the most powerful nation in the world, not through strength of arms, but through strength of ideas, and the resolve to get done the impossible. We have lost those values and now see governement as our savior. Lets make America great again by throwing out the old rules of the 2 party system, and voting not for the worse of 2 evils, but for the better man and better solution, regardless of what party he follows.

If we don’t change as a people, not as a government, then the nation is doomed. Instead of raging hordes of barbarians that will topple our great society it will be our own sloth and ignorance, with the final stroke of apathy. Vote, weild power, and demand a higher return from those we put in place to represent us. Don’t be a sheep to the nightly news, make up your own mind.”
