Snow Day!
Ahh snow days, they’re the best, aren’t they? Okay, well maybe not for some of you who still have to go into work. Last night I had the most fun sledding with my friends and then going to Starbucks for something hot to drink (see post below). We checked the clock at 10 p.m. and decided it was time to head out. After all, some of the people in our group are teachers and there was no sign of a delay or cancellation.
So it was a big surprise to me when I woke up to my boss calling me at 6 a.m. At first I thought he had called to let me know whether I could work from home that day or not, since I had sent him an e-mail the previous night asking for the opportunity. Turns out he was calling to let me know that the office was closed for the day and that I should update the web site. I did and went back to bed for a few hours since I had a hard time sleeping the night before.
It’s funny how 10-12 inches of snow can change our everyday routine. I took a picture of the outside at 6 a.m. before heading back to bed…

I woke up later to find that the sidewalks were being cleared, but the roads weren’t plowed, nor were the driveways. I walked over to the leasing office to drop off my rent check when I reminded our landlord about a wonderful invention called the snow plow. After all, I had spent part of the day running outside pushing my neighbors through the street since their cars couldn’t gain traction.
I come to find out that the system they have in place aren’t the greatest. The apartment complex takes care of the sidewalks, another company is supposed to plow the driveways, and the city is supposed to plow the streets. The complex cleared the sidewalks by 11 a.m., the contractor cleared the driveways around 4:30 p.m., and the city finally rolled in to plow the streets at 9:30 p.m. What great timing! If anything, it’d be nice to have the streets cleared first, then the driveways, and finally the sidewalks. Oh well… can’t change it now.

Perhaps one of the highlights of my day was when I called my friend Betsy, who is a teacher. Betsy lives for snow days. I was talking to her and she had this brilliant idea that her and her roommate Faith were going to hike to Kroger. “Are you all out of food?” I asked. “Nope, we just want a little adventure.” So it made me laugh when I got a text later that said:
“As we speak, Lewis and Clark are on a journey to the foreign land of Krogeria by foot….”
I cannot tell you how much that made me laugh… here’s a picture from their journey…

I just love how my friends can take an ordinary snow day and turn it into something fun. I don’t have snow boots, nor do I live close to a grocery store, so I didn’t really feel like going on an adventure. Besides, growing up I had a paper route, so I spent many days trekking through the snow… the novelty has worn off for me.
Overall, it was a good day. It was a nice break from the routine. I’ve already received an e-mail from my boss letting me know that the offices are open. And since my streets are now plowed, I shouldn’t have too much trouble getting into work. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Does anyone else have a snow day story? I wonder…
