Becoming a Foodie

Posted by Kiel on Feb 15, 2009

My friends, I think I have been living in Carmel entirely too long. Here’s the problem, my food tastes are changing and I can’t figure out why. I have found myself hitting up Trader Joe’s looking for new food to try and got excited when I figured out how awesome The Fresh Market was!

Either I’m becoming a Carmel-ite or I’m becoming a “foodie.” I’m sure hope it’s the latter and not the former. I grew up in a house of four boys, my mom and dad. In order to make our food budget go farther, my mom often bought generic. She would even do funny things like mix powered milk in with a half-empty gallon of milk to “make it last longer.” Sugared cereal? Nope, we didn’t get that very much… often times it would be Cheerios with some sugar dumped in it. Soda? That was a treat and even then, it was Big K or Sam’s Choice.

As I’ve gotten older, and most recently in the past year, I have started to appreciate food more. I rarely eat out at fast food places, I try to go to local restaurants (not chain restaurants), and I’ve even started shopping at Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market.

Seriously people, what is wrong with me? Have all those years of generic boxed foods followed by fast food made me more adventurous? What about eating the same thing day after day because I only ate what my Dad bought from Sam’s Club? I think that’s gotta be it.

I’m more adventurous with food because for the past 25 years of my life, I have kept things pretty routine. I now enjoy looking through recipes and trying new things. I enjoy walking down the aisle of Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market looking for something new to try. I enjoy going to non-chain restaurants and trying unique things.

Yup, I think that I have officially become a foodie… and you know what? I think I’m okay with that. I am actually enjoying trying new things rather than dreading them! Here’s to trying new things! And below you will find a funny video I found about Trader Joe’s that someone made, it made me laugh. :-)
