Christmas Memories from 1996

I found this little gem of a video while going through the old family videos. It was 1996 and my Dad had joined a barbershop chorus called "Pride of Indy." Don’t ask me why he did it, only he can really answer that. But that year I decided to join him and the guys during the Christmas season and it was the first year I was really exposed to four-part harmony.

This video was taken from a local television station’s Christmas special and was filmed at the ArtsGarden in Circle Centre Mall. For reasons I can’t recall, I didn’t take part in the filming, although I was on location while they were doing it. I did, however, come back on another day and perform with the guys during a busy shopping day. I would post video of that day, but our cameraman had a hard time keeping the camera steady… thanks Uncle Larry! Ha ha!

This memory sticks out to me for a couple of reasons. One, it took place about a year after Circle Centre first opened… and for some reason, I thought that Circle Centre was the greatest thing around. Second, and most importantly, it’s time I got to spend with my Dad. I also really enjoyed hanging around these guys, it was a great time!

I was an eighties child, so these videos in no way surprised me in their ability to be corny, yet catchy. And just so you know, I didn’t find these videos, Steven did. Sometimes I wonder where he finds the weird stuff that he does, but at least we all get a great laugh. Enjoy!

Another Day, Another Year Older

Well, I’m officially 26. I was just watching a video from my sixth birthday… it’s amazing how time flies.

Birthdays haven’t been a big deal to me since I was a child. Growing up I remember how we used to make everyone’s birthday a big deal. Often times we’d get together at my grandparents’ house the weekend following our birthday and have cake and ice cream… and if we were really lucky, we’d have an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen! My family always made sure people felt special on their birthday.

Now that I’m grown up, I just see my birthday as another day and I’m pretty content with that. It’s on this day that I just reflect at how much I’ve grown, how far God has taken me, and how thankful I am to have the friends and family I do… this year is no exception.

For the first time in memory, my friends are planning something for me tonight. Tonight is supposed to be a surprise, and while I’m not a big fan of surprises, I am extremely thankful (and excited) that I have people in my life who want to do something for me to help make the day special. So to Stephanie, Chad, Faith, Betsy, and Andrew, thank you so much for being great friends. And Serena, thank you for being so awesome to bake an awesome treat for my birthday!

Well, I thought I’d give you all a little treat. That video from my sixth birthday that I talked about at the beginning of the post? Yeah, you can watch it. You might enjoy seeing little me trying to blow out candles.

Kinnaman Home Movies: Easter 1991

As we were preparing the Easter eggs for the kids, I thought about our past Easter egg hunts and came across this little video. From what I can remember, my family used to shut all the blinds/curtains while they put the eggs around the back yard. Then all of us kids would gather some paper grocery bags and wait on the bag porch until we were given the go-ahead. As you’ll tell from this video, Eric got a head start because he was the youngest, then me, and finally all the older kids.

Sometimes We All Need a Little Validation…

I read a story in The Indianapolis Star about two Purdue students who decided one day to go outside and give compliments to passers-by. “I just woke up one day and pretty much just thought to myself to go give free compliments today,” said Westcott of Plainfield, Ill. “I told Cameron about it and he was excited about it. We both came out here and had a great time doing it.”

Sometimes all we need to get through the day is a kind word from someone. Check out this short film called “Validation,” maybe it’ll give you something to smile about today. And don’t forget to pay a compliment to someone, just like the students at Purdue, you just might make someone’s day!

V-Day History Lesson for the Girls

Many of you may not know that I have a great group of friends: Chad, Andrew, Betsy, Faith, and Stephanie. For Valentine’s Day this year, the girls thought it would be great fun to treat us to a surprise date on Saturday night. Not to be upstaged, we guys decided that we would celebrate Valentine’s Day all week long. After all, why should our love for the girls be confined to just one day?

Since the three girls all work in the school system, we have divided up each day into a subject. Sunday was Math where the girls had to answer a story problem. We gave them a web site address and they had to answer correctly to receive a special present from us.

Today is “History” and well, us guys are sentimental. So we put together this 10 minute video for the girls to watch of our favorite memories from the past year. So Faith, Betsy, and Stephanie, watch this video and take notes, there will be a test on this later.

And don’t worry, the next few days have a few more surprises in store for you.

Showbiz Pizza Place – The Band is Back!

Ahhh, if you grew up in the 80s and early-90s, you may have visited Showbiz Pizza Place. Oh man, that was a place where a kid could be a kid.

If one thing about Showbiz Pizza stuck out, it was definitely the stage show with the animatronics… they were called the “Rock-Afire Explosion.” I don’t remember the music, but I definitely remember the stage set-up…

Well, you have to leave it to a crazed fan to actually bring the band back. I’m not sure exactly when Showbiz Pizza fazed out this act, but my guess it would be around the time they re-branded the stores to the now famous, “Chuck E. Cheese” brand. But some fans are bringing back the Rock-Afire Explosion in their basements, having bought the stage shows, they are now bringing them back to life and they’re singing some of our favorite contemporary songs. Check out this one featuring Usher with “Love in this Club.”

Wow, how awesome/weird is that? Ha ha! If you’re feeling a nostalgic trip right now there are a few websites you can check out. The first one is about a guy that is making a movie about the Rock-Afire Explosion, rockafiremovie.com. Right now it looks like it’s being released in Texas and I’m hoping it comes to DVD soon.

The next site you’ll want to check out is showbizpizza.com. It’ll tell you the history of the Showbiz franchise and perhaps spark some memories for you. Well, I guess if I’m going to leave you with anything, it will have to be one of those famous Showbiz Pizza commercials we all saw during Saturday morning cartoons. Enjoy!

Hayley Westenra – Prayer

Hayley Westenra has a VERY beautiful voice and I absolutely love the message of this song. My favorite verse is when she sings: “Let your arms enfold us, Through the dark of night, Will your angels hold us, Till we see the light.” This woman has the voice of an angel.

My brother gave me an iTunes gift card, so I’ve been searching for new music that I might not buy otherwise. I came across ADELE and loved her song, “Chasing Pavements,” so I figured I’d look for other songs by her. “Make You Feel My Love” is pretty good, it probably won’t be on my top list, but the lyrics are definitely awesome!

Santa Slams Those Who Don’t Give

So the economy is tough right now, and for those of us that work in non-profits and churches, it becomes an especially hard time as people’s “discretionary” giving goes down. Elevation Church did an awesome video called “Yule-Tithe Greetings” and from a communications perspective, it’s a light-hearted way to say, “we still need you to give!” Great job Elevation Church!
